LORD SHIVA
Lord Shiva who is responsible for destruction, is considered as “Swayambhoo”, born by himself. Lord Shiva is benevolent (worshipped as Shankara) and at the same time fearsome (worshipped as Bhairava). In benevolent form he is a yogi who lives an ascetic life in Mount Kailas. In the same way he is a householder with wife Parvathi. In fearsome aspect he is depicted as slaying demons. He is usually worshipped in the form of “Shivalingam”.
Lord Shiva is installed in the North-East corner of sanctum sanctorum.
Offerings are Mrutyunjaya Pushpanjali, chanting hymns to cure diseases and anointing with water, sacred ash, milk and ghee. On Shivaratri day (Thiruvonam star in the month of Kumbham) Mrutyunjaya homam and Ashtabhishekam are the main offerings.
